The lowermost lobes cup the petiole - inspiring the cultivar name 'Osakazuki' which translates to 'saki cup-like'. Small red flowers are produced in Corymbs in late spring to early summer and are followed by deep red samaras. 'Osakazuki' is often described as the most brilliant of the Japanese Maples due to the vivid crimson shade the leaves become in autumn.
