Small, female flowers are reddish-brown and produced on thin stems. The greenish-yellow male catkins are produced in clusters in May as the leaves emerge. The female flowers are followed by round, pale brown acorns.

Best in full sun to partial shade in fertile, well drained soil that is acidic. Larger leaves will be produced if the tree is planted in a sheltered position, protected from wind.
