Description: A large, Deciduous tree with an upright, spreading habit and dark brown (nearly black) bark. Large, glossy deep green leaves are obovate to oblong in shape with pinnatifid lobing. The leaves can reach more than 30cm in length and 20cm wide on established trees. Male and female flowers are produced on the same plant, but separately. The greenish-yellow male catkins are produced in spring as the leaves emerge. The female flowers are small and followed by round, pale brown acorns. The foliage turns shades of bright orange and red in autumn before falling.
