Description: A large, Deciduous Shrub with an upright, spreading habit, aromatic bark and spiny branches. Mid-green, pinnate leaves have lanceolate to oblong leaflets with finely toothed margins and are tinted red when young. The central stem of each leaf is also armed with sharp spines. Small, yellow, cup-shaped flowers are produced in clusters along the branches from late spring into early summer and are followed by red berries containing shiny black seed. Part of the fruit is used as a culinary spice.

Zanthoxylum acanthopodium can also be grown as a small tree. Slow-growing.
