Description: A small, Evergreen coniferous tree with a conical habit. Branches held near the base of the tree are nearly horizontal and gradually become more upright towards the top. Short, pointed needles are pale yellow when young, and turn bright green with age. The new growth held at the tips of the branches is pendulous and turns nearly white in winter. Small and round male cones are held at the tips of the branches. Female cones are larger and composed of toothed scales with a central point. Cones are green when young and turn brown with age. Slow growing.

'Sugi' is the Japanese word for Cryptomeria, so this plant is often listed as Cryptomeria japonica 'Sekkan'.

Short needles with pointed tips are bright yellow when young, nearly white in winter, and turn bright green with age. The many needles are arranged in spirals along the slender branches.

Cultivation:

Best in full sun to partial shade in a position sheltered from strong winds. Cryptomeria japonica 'Sekkan-sugi' prefers fertile, lime-free soil that is moisture-retentive, but well-drained.
